Pork
Mountain View Farms is located in Wai’anae Valley and owned by David Wong, a third generation farmer. His Korean farming techniques focus on microbiome and inoculation with probiotics and prebiotics, creating a healthy environment for his pigs. They are raised in large pens using a “deep litter” system that creates a living floor where the animals can express their natural behavior to dig and root, therefore significantly reducing the stress on the animals.
Chicken
Punachicks Farm is located in Kea’au on the Big Island. It is a small family farm owned by the Taaroa family. They raise chickens on lush green pasture in large mobile hoop houses with plenty of room for the birds. Their additional feed, aside from growing grass and bugs, consists of organic certified grain and soldier fly larvae, which the Taaroa’s harvest through natural composting. Llody Case raises pigs and traps wild hogs at his farm in Waimea. Through a collaboration with Kulana Foods in Hilo, he is able to USDA certify and market local wild pigs “boar.” Lloyd’s feral pig harvest is one of the only programs of its kind in the state that helps utilize this wild invasive species.
